SooToday.com received the following note and photos from Sonny and Lindsay Spina, who flew back to the Sault yesterday after a harrowing visit to the Caribbean.

*************************** Hi Dave,

We flew out of Camaguey Cuba on Wednesday.

We were staying at a resort in Santa Lucia, Cuba and the government evacuated us on Sunday morning.

It was so beautiful that day that we didn't really believe that a hurricane was coming.

They evacuated us to Camaguey City, where we stayed for the next several days.

Ike hit us around 4 a.m. Monday morning and we lost all phone lines, power and running water.

From our room, all we could hear was the sound of glass breaking and the wind whistling by us.

After it passed we found out that the winds were at 200 kilometre an hour in Camaguey and that a wave had hit land at the resort we were at in Santa Lucia and it had gone from the ocean all the way to the front lobby and wiped out the resort completely.

The hotel in Camaguey was hit hard but no one was hurt.

The amazing thing is that all through the storm (except for the worst parts) all of the people in the area kept working, cleaning all of the broken glass and bricks and pushing the water away from the rooms as best they could.

The photo [shown] with Lindsay by the tree was actually taken right outside our room.

Around 4 a.m. we heard the crash and opened the door to see that tree down and the wind blowing sheets of rain past us, the only thing that stopped the tree from reaching our room was a large concrete wall just behind it.
