Snowmobile plunged over embankment, police say

************************* The investigation into this fatal snowmobile accident is currently continuing by officers from traffic services, patrol and forensic services and the coroner’s office.

Early investigation indicates that the accident occurred just after 7 p.m. on the Ontario Federation Snowmobile Club groomed trail, approximately 500 metres from the end of Old Goulais Bay Road.

A trail groomer was in the process of grooming the trail in a curved area when he observed fresh snowmobile tracks leaving the groomed trail, going over an embankment.

A snowmobile was observed approximately 25 feet down the embankment.

The driver was found unconscious under the snowmachine.

Officers from the OPP, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, Fire and Ambulance Services responded.

The 35-year-old male driver was transported to hospital by ambulance but succumbed to his injuries.

A post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow morning to determine the cause of death.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

It is still early in the investigation and no further details will be released at this time.
