Small uptick in hospitalizations, active COVID case count drops: APH

Algoma Public Health is reporting an increase in the number of hospitalized patients in the region with confirmed COVID-19.

The number of patients is up to 30, an increase of one from Tuesday's report.

APH is also reporting seven patients admitted for COVID-related reasons, up by three from Tuesday's report.

ICU patients with confirmed COVID-19 is up by one to six, while the number of ICU patients admitted for COVID-related reasons is up by two to three.

The latest numbers from APH, released at approximately 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, show a decrease in active cases as well.

The number of active cases dropped by 22 to 375 in Wednesday's update.

APH is reporting 57 new confirmed cases in the region - for a total of 5,434 in 2022 and 7,638 since the beginning of the pandemic - and 79 newly resolved cases. The number of resolved cases in the region is up to 7,263.

A total of 297 new tests were completed since Tuesday's report.

Note: As of Dec. 31, 2021, the province has limited COVID-19 PCR testing to the highest risk populations. Furthermore, some people with mild or asymptomatic infection may not seek testing. Algoma Public Health states that the numbers of confirmed cases are an underestimate of the actual number of people with COVID-19 in the Algoma region.
