The police watchdog for Ontario is currently investigating a pair of alleged custody injuries involving Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) website, investigations were launched after the civilian law enforcement agency was notified Jan. 15 and March 2 of the alleged incidents. The investigations are ongoing.

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service was the subject of five SIU investigations last year, with one of them resulting in charges.

Sgt. Marc Dubie was charged with two counts of sexual assault in December 2023 following an investigation by the police watchdog. Dubie’s next appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice is scheduled for later this month.

The SIU, which is independent of police, conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police and civilians resulting in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
