SIU clarifies 911 calls preceding death of woman in Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY -- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has released new information about the 911 calls that preceded the death of a 21-year-old woman in Thunder Bay.

Jenna Ostberg from Bearskin Lake First Nation was found dead in a Ray Boulevard residence in the early hours of the morning of Dec. 30.

The SIU initially reported, on Jan. 3, that Thunder Bay Police had received a 911 call about a domestic disturbance, followed by a second call cancelling the request for police.

Police did not respond until a third call was made to 911 indicating the woman had died.

In a news release Thursday, the SIU clarified that after reviewing the police communications recordings, it could confirm that the first call "was not in relation to violence in the home involving the woman."

The agency said the caller had contacted police to report that the woman was an unwanted visitor at her home, as there were court conditions that she and her son, who was also at the residence, were not supposed to be around each other.

According to the SIU, the caller was concerned her son could be arrested for breach of the conditions, and she asked that police remove the woman from the home.

At some point later, she contacted police again to cancel the call for service, reporting that the woman had already left the residence.

The SIU did not release a timeline for the three calls.

It said the initial results of the autopsy have been received, and that the investigation is ongoing, including interviews with witnesses.
