Sinkholes raise concern behind Canadian Tire store (4 photos)

City to spend more than $400,000 to fix problem caused by collapsed storm sewer on private property

Avery Construction Ltd. Is expected to win a $303,305 city contract Monday to fix a problem on private property between the Canadian Tire store and Group Health Centre.

An 85-metre stretch of municipally-owned, large-diameter storm sewer is failing there, says Carl Rumiel, the city’s manager of design and transportation engineeering.

“Sinkholes have appeared along the surface of this sewer requiring the immediate need to replace this section of the sewer,” Rumiel says in a report to Mayor Provenzano and city councillors.

While on private property, the storm sewer crosses the two properties on a city easement.

Part of a Group Health Centre parking lot has been rendered unusable by the problem.

Avery Construction submitted the lowest of three bids for the project.

An additional $100,000 will be spent to relocate PUC electrical infrastructure on the site.

The Shaw Spotlight broadcast of Monday’s City Council meeting will be livestreamed on SooToday starting at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
