On Monday January 4, Mayor Provenzano will raise the Special Olympics Flag at City Hall at 1:30 p.m.
The flag is one of six flags that will move from town to town across Ontario to raise public awareness of the Special Olympics movement.
There will also be a flag in the lobby of the City Hall which the public are invited to sign in support the Special Olympics and the athletes competing in both local school and regional competitions throughout Ontario.
Sault Ste. Marie is hosting the 2016 North East Winter games on February 20.
The events include curling, nordic skiing and snowshoeing.
The Flag Relay organizer, Len Donnelly, said "The Knights are committed to Special Olympics and to hundreds of grassroots programs for people with intellectual disabilities. They are an expression of our belief in the intrinsic worth of every human being."
The Special Olympics flag and relay flag with signatures will be in Sault Ste. Marie for a week before they move on to Elliot Lake.
These flags and the other five regional flags will finish at the Special Olympics Provincial School Championships in Durham Region on June 1 to 3, 2016.
