The owner of a now-defunct funeral home in Mattawa, Ontario today pleaded guilty to 48 criminal charges including fraud, neglect of duty and indignities to human remains.

Timmy Lynn Smith, 51, admitted stealing coffins and charitable donations, providing ashes to the wrong families, and allowing human remains to decompose at his T.L. Smith Funeral Home, located about 40 kilometres east of North Bay.

Smith also acknowledges defrauding families of more than $40,000 in prepaid funeral services.

He'll be sentenced on November 20. Later this week, Smith faces a separate trial on unrelated charges of sexual assault, sexual interference and committing an indecent act.
