Seeds of kindness: Sault family offers free veggies (5 photos)

The Gilmer family has posted a sign in front of their John Street home, inviting anyone to pick through their vegetable garden

For the last several weeks, Ellie Gilmer and her kids Frederick and Fiona have been offering free homegrown vegetables out of their street-side garden on John Street.

Frederick Gilmer says the idea sprouted when they grew too many veggies for their household to consume.

“We weren’t eating them fast enough, so we just put out a sign,” he says. “It’s the first time we’ve done this.”

Their garden features an assortment of veggies like lettuce, carrots, and kale.

While Gilmer says the family never intended for their gesture to be a giant act of kindness, locals say the free vegetable garden has left an incredibly positive impact in the area.

“It’s wonderful what they’re doing,” one lady said.

“We live among remarkable humans,” another resident added.

The Gilmers hope more people take advantage of their offering as they still have lots of veggies available in front of their home.

“We just don’t want them to rot,” Frederick Gilmer says. “I actually wish people would take more veggies.”

The family is encouraging residents to stop by anytime in the 400 block of John St. and help themselves.

“There’s no judgment — they’re free,” he says. “Just come by and grab some.”
