Search begins for remains in 38-year-old murder

OPP activate search for remains

KIRKLAND LAKE, ON - The Ontario Provincial Police has activated a search for the remains of Katherine May Wilson, the 12-year-old Kirkland Lake girl who was abducted and murdered in 1970.

In January 2009, Barry Vincent Manion, 60, London, Ontario, was charged with non-capital murder.

Manion pled guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment in March 2009; he died a few days later in his cell at the Monteith Correctional Complex.

As a result of information obtained during the course of the investigation and Manion’s subsequent plea, police established a search area on Goodfish Road, Morrisette Township, just north of Kirkland Lake.

A police security perimeter is in place and the area is under restricted entry.

A portion of Goodfish Road has been closed to traffic.

Members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment, the OPP Emergency Response Team and Forensic Services Unit are on scene.

Assisting with the meticulous task of searching a wooded area, are senior students from the forensic anthropology/ archeology programs at the University of Toronto and Wilfrid Laurier University under the professorial supervision of Dr. Dean Knight.

The estimated search schedule is a period of 14 days beginning Saturday May 23 to June 5.

The investigation is under the direction of Detective Inspector Ken Leppert, OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, Orillia.
