Scrap metal burns at Algoma Steel loading dock

City firefighters and Algoma Steel Emergency Services acted quickly to put down a fire that broke out just before noon today at Algoma Steel's Transwest Material Processing Facility.

City firefighters and Algoma Steel Emergency Services acted quickly to put down a fire that broke out just before noon today at Algoma Steel's Transwest Material Processing Facility.

The fire occurred in a pile of scrap metal - shredded tire wire used in the steelmaking process.

No one was injured.

As of 1 p.m., SooToday.com is advised that the fire has been extinguished.

Firefighters from both Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services and ASI's in-house fire department remain at the scene.

They're currently dousing the fire, resulting in plumes of white smoke that can be seen throughout much of Sault Ste. Marie.

Algoma Steel has notified the Ontario Ministry of the Environment of the fire.
