McGuinty government supports private sector business growth in Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - The McGuinty government is investing in the set up of a local mobile welding business that consists of a workshop as well as mobile and field welding capacity that will allow the business to work on-site in sectors such as agriculture, mining, logging and at construction sites using heavy equipment, David Orazietti, MPP announced today.

“Our government understands the importance of investing in local private businesses and creating opportunities that help northerners to contribute and strengthen Sault Ste. Marie’s economy,” said Orazietti. “The province’s 2010 budget is focused on improving Northern Ontario’s economy and that is why we increased the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation’s (NOHFC) budget by an additional $10 million, bringing the total to $90 million.”

“I believe it is important for the government to invest in Northern Ontario’s entrepreneurs because local business will always be essential to meeting the community’s need for products and services such as welding,” said Scott Martyn, owner of Mobile Welding.

Provincial investments by the NOHFC are part of the Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities, which was launched in 2004.

The NOHFC’s programs led to more than 940 projects in 2009-10, which helped create and retain more than 2,300 jobs in the North.

Quick facts

To date in Northern Ontario, a total of 43 new businesses have been launched with NOEP funding totaling nearly $1.95 million and dozens more applications currently being processed.

In 2005, the McGuinty government restored the NOHFC’s original mandate of investing in both community development and private sector job creation. Six new programs were introduced at that time.
