Opportunity for collaboration between science and innovation

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - (June 13) - The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) has a new tenant in its office located on the campus of Algoma University and it has a lot to do with science.

Science enterprise Algoma (seA), has recently moved office spaces and has joined SSMIC, allowing for the opportunity for further collaboration on science and technology projects and initiatives.

Established in January 2005, science enterprise Algoma takes advantage of economic development opportunities that exist in the natural resource and life science industry sectors in the Algoma region and Northern Ontario.

“Co-location of seA and the SSMIC not only allows both organizations to share our expertise and resources for the benefit of academic and government partners but also for private sector clients who are involved in information technology and bioscience based business,” said Errol Caldwell, executive director of seA. “Our combined efforts will greatly assist in helping to build capacity for research and commercial development in both information technology and bioscience.”

Errol Caldwell expressed his gratitude to the Great Lakes Forestry Centre for providing financial support and office space for seA over the last three years.

He added: “This support along with other member contributions resulted in the establishment of our organization and is a major factor in our evolution and expanding partnerships.”

“The addition of seA to our office environment is great news and provides further opportunity to grow our science and technology sector,” said Tom Vair, executive director of SSMIC.

“Together we are able to better serve our science and technology clients and ensure they have access to the programs and expertise they need to achieve success, Vair said. "We look forward to collaborating with seA and continuing our work with the many promising companies and projects in the region.”

On June 14, 2008 at Algoma University’s convocation ceremony, Errol Caldwell will be honoured with the Senate Award, making him an honorary member of Algoma U.

In his role as executive director with seA, Caldwell champions science education and innovation as well as significantly improving the science-based economy in the Algoma district and Northern Ontario.

Through Caldwell’s leadership, seA has coordinated efforts amongst many science organizations within Sault Ste. Marie to make a national showcase for science cooperation among three levels of government, private industry, academia and non-profit organizations.

For more information on either of these organizations and to learn about their continued commitment to science, technology and innovation, visit seA at SSMIC.com or SeAInnovation.com.
