School board plans return to in-person classes for River View students November 8

No new cases of COVID linked to school, board director says; students may return after 14 days of virtual learning

River View Public School students will be returning to in-person instruction Monday Nov. 8.

The school’s students were flipped to virtual instruction beginning Monday, Oct. 25 after positive COVID-19 tests were linked to individuals connected to River View.

Algoma Public Health (APH) declared an outbreak of COVID at the school on Oct. 21.

“We spoke with Algoma Public Health Wednesday and they let us know that the outbreak would be declared over when at least 14 days had passed with no evidence of ongoing transmission,” said Lucia Reece, Algoma District School Board (ADSB) director of education, speaking to SooToday Friday.

“We’ve advised families that all students will be returning on Monday, Nov. 8...luckily we haven’t had any further cases this week,” Reece said.

Earlier, the ADSB emphasized that the move to remote/virtual learning for River View students was a precautionary measure (not a school closing) made by the school board, not one that was ordered by APH.
