Former Saultite Jason McFarling, who worked as a boom operator on the film musical Chicago, was mentioned during last night's Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

McFarling, a 29-year-old graduate of Humber College whose curriculum vitae includes a brief stint at MCTV's Sault Ste. Marie studio, received special thanks from David Lee, who together with Michael Minkler and Dominick Tavella accepted the Oscar for Sound.

Here in the Sault, McFarling's mom Lynda was watching the broadcast because she'd been tipped by her son that Lee intended to mention him.

Full text of acceptance speech:

Michael Minkler: Well, being a third generation sound man, I knew at a young age what I wanted to do in my life. When I saw West Side Story for the first time when I was really young, I thought to myself, that's a goal. I want to work on a picture like that, a magnificent musical. So Harvey Weinstein, thank you very much for that. And not to be redundant, but, Rob, you're fantastic and thank you very much for everything.

David Lee: Peggy, I'd like to say I love you, honey. I wish you were here with me. But I know you're right there in Toronto at Erdemeyer's having a wonderful time. Don Carmody, I wish there were more producers like you. And to my boom man and my crew, Denis Bellingham and Jason McFarling, I love you, too.

Dominick Tavella: Love you, Molly. Love you, girl.
