PRESS RELEASE

HURON-SUPERIOR CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

************************** SAULT STE. MARIE - (Wednesday, June 18) - The Huron Superior Catholic District School Board is pleased to acknowledge the election of Trustee Regis O'Connor as President of the Canadian Catholic School Trustees Association (CCSTA).

A veteran HSCDSB trustee and six-year member of the CCSTA executive, O'Connor was acclaimed to the president's position on June 7, 2008 at the CCSTA's national convention in Brantford.

"I am honoured to represent Catholic trustees from across Canada. The responsibility is a bit awesome," said O'Connor.

The CCSTA serves as a lobbying organization for the interests of Catholic education in every province and territory.

As president, O'Connor will speak about issues that concern Catholic school boards nationwide.

"In some ways the job is a watchdog position that will study issues involving all aspects of Catholic education as they relate to the rest of Canada.

"Right now we are watching closely a court case in the Northwest Territories that could have national implications on Catholic education."

The CCSTA executive members gather together three times a year.

Other meetings as necessary are held via teleconference to mitigate expenses.

"A big challenge with this position is to keep in contact with trustees across this broad land and stay informed on Catholic education issues in every province and territory."

O'Connor's term as president is for two years.
