SAULT TRIBE OF CHIPPEWA INDIANS

************************* Board to discuss consent decree on September 17

SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. - Chairperson Aaron Payment has announced a special board meeting will be held on Monday, September 17, at 9 a.m. at the Kewadin Casino and Convention Center in Sault Ste. Marie to discuss the referendum on the consent decree.

The Sault Tribe board of directors voted by a seven to five margin on August 14 to conduct a referendum to decide whether or not the Sault Tribe should enter into a permanent agreement with the state and federal governments regarding tribal members’ treaty rights related to inland fishing, hunting and gathering.

Tribal officials have been working to create an “inland consent decree” which is essentially an agreement between the tribes, the State of Michigan, and the federal government which defines and details the specific treaty rights of tribal members.
