Sault Ste. Marie landlord fined $120,000 for various Ontario Fire Code offences

The offences were discovered in a multi-unit residence during a routine inspection

While conducting routine inspections, Sault Ste. Marie fire prevention officers discovered several Ontario Fire Code offences in a multi-unit residence.

The landlord of those units received $120,000 in fines for those offenses.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service Fire Prevention Officers conduct routine inspections of all buildings within the municipality of Sault Ste. Marie. The goal of these inspections is to ensure occupant safety through education and enforcing the regulations contained within the Ontario Fire Code and the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.

On Thursday, Feb. 24, a landlord of a multi-unit residential occupancy in the municipality of Sault Ste. Marie was fined $120,000 for various offences under the Ontario Fire Code.

“SSMFS Fire Prevention Officers enforce the Ontario Fire Code on a daily basis,” stated Deputy Chief Paul Milosevich. “As we see in this case, the fines can become substantive when corrective action is not taken.”

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services would like to remind all citizens to ensure they have properly located and functioning smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as required by the Ontario Fire Code.
