SPECIAL OLYMPICS ONTARIO

Registration Day for our Special Olympics athletes is on Sunday Sept. 16 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Water Tower Inn Pavilion. All athletes are expected to attend to register and pick up their awards banquet tickets.

If you haven’t been involved with Special Olympics in the past, this is a great time to come out to see what we have to offer, as an athlete or volunteer! There will be lots of athletes, volunteers and coaches to talk to.

This Fall, we are planning to introduce the Active Start program for 2 to 6 year olds. It is designed to introduce basic fundamental movement skills to young athletes. The idea behind physical literacy is that young athletes need a supportive, inclusive and fun environment to develop the basic skills necessary to remain active in sport. Drop by on registration day to talk to our Active Start coaches to see if this will be of interest for your Special Olympics athlete.

Along with planning for our sports for the next year, the Special Olympics - Sault Ste. Marie volunteers are busy with a couple of fundraisers to support our athletes.

Our Soo Mill Charity BBQ is being held Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., so come out to have a burger or hot dog with us!

Check out Misty 50s Bar on Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for Catch the Ace. Tickets will be on sale from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at a cost of $5 each (cash only). The draw will take place at 9:15 p.m. and you must be present to win. We’ll be there each Tuesday evening until the Ace of Spades is found.

Our local Special Olympic athletes participate in bowling, curling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, track and field, swimming, baseball and floor hockey. Our athletes participate at the local, regional, provincial and national levels. Our Community Council (all volunteers) raises funds throughout the year to ensure that we have the financial resources available to cover transportation, uniforms, equipment, overnight trip accommodations and other expenses, and hosts an Annual Awards Banquet for our athletes.

If you would like more information on how you can become an athlete, volunteer or help support our athletes, visit the local website or email us.
