Sault Ste. Marie, you’re buying a lot of pot.

Five cannabis retail outlets in the city pulled in $2,654,000 during the first three months of 2021, according to numbers provided to SooToday by the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS). The Sault ranks 23rd out of 160 Ontario cities for total retail sales, and ranks 36th in the province for cannabis sales per capita.

A total of 359,000 grams were sold by the city’s cannabis retailers within the same three-month period.

Two new pot shops - Highlife at 625 Trunk Road and Due North Cannabis Co. at 695 Pine Street - have opened in the Sault since that time.

Here are the top ten retail outlets for cannabis sales in all of northern Ontario between January and March of 2021:

  2. Kana Leaf, North Bay
  3. Sessions Cannabis, Timmins
  4. Tokyo Smoke, Thunder Bay
  5. Cheerful Charlie's, North Bay
  6. J. Supply Co., Thunder Bay

More than $840 million was raked in by Ontario’s 572 cannabis retail stores and the OCS website between April 2020 and March 2021, with a little over 99 million grams sold, according to a report released by OCS earlier this month.

A total of 12,873 complaints were received by OCS during the 2020-2021 fiscal year. The province notes that 72 per cent of those complaints were vape-related.
