REGISTERED NURSES' ASSOCIATION OF ONTARIO

Nurses across the province are set to engage with the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario’s (RNAO) president on Oct. 8 to share their experiences, concerns and solutions related to their practice and the health system as a whole.

As part of RNAO’s fifth-annual Fall Tour, RNAO president Dr. Angela Cooper Brathwaite will meet with RNs, NPs and nursing students at Grand Gardens North in Sault Ste. Marie to discuss the key health issues they believe should be front and centre for the new Canadian government.

“Nurses are the backbone of the health system and provide vital insight into the broad range of factors that foster good health, good health care and good nursing,” says Liliana Bressan, RNAO’s Algoma Chapter president. “In order to better understand the issues facing our health system, we must work together to come up with solutions to improve people’s health.” Some of those solutions are outlined in the association’s federal election platform.

In September, RNAO released its policy platform A platform for a healthy Canada to highlight the issues that nurses have been vocal about. It includes nine recommendations that cover four areas: access to care, social determinants of health, the environment and fiscal capacity.

“Health isn’t just about health care. Our economic and social circumstances affect our health and so does the environment,” says Brathwaite. “Nurses are looking to the federal government to act on our recommendations and invest in services that will put Canadians first.”

Sault Ste. Marie is one of the stops on the five-city provincial tour RNAO President Angela Cooper Brathwaite and RNAO CEO Dr. Doris Grinspun are conducting during October and November. Brathwaite and Grinspun are also visiting Mississauga, Barrie and Guelph.

“We are eager to hear first hand from nurses in the communities in where they live and work and learn about how we can better meet the needs of Ontarians,” says Brathwaite. “We encourage all nurses and nursing students to come out and speak about the important issues to them and the populations they serve.”
