Sault loses longtime judge

Described by family as 'a true Sault boy at heart' Justice James Greco served on the bench from 1968-2004
GRECO, James Judge BIO

SooToday received the following death notice for retired Justice James Greco:

*************************
A bright light in our lives has dimmed as dad passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the Sault Area Hospital at the age of 88 years following a brief illness.

Cherished son of the late James E. Greco and Eda Greco (nee Palumbo). Beloved husband of 62 years to Lorna (nee Travaglini). Much loved father of Claudia Greco (Greg Sandvik) and Paul Greco (Denise Spadotto). Adored grandfather of Nicolas, Talia and Gioia.

James practiced law for eight years before he became a judge and was appointed to the bench in 1968 serving in various capacities for the Province of Ontario until he retired at age 75 in 2004.

After retirement he served on The Ontario Review Board for many years. A true Sault-boy at heart, James served the community he loved through his service on various boards including City of Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board, Sault Ste. Marie Public Utilities Commission, Algoma University and Sault Ste. Marie General Hospital.

He shared his passion for the law as an Adjunct Professor in Law at Algoma University and Professor at Lake Superior State University Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. He was proud of his accomplishments and his work but his light shone brightest when surrounded by family and friends.

He will always be remembered for his love of cooking, infectious charm, clever wit and at times ridiculous sense of humour that made us all laugh when we were in his presence.

As per dad’s request a funeral service will not be held; instead remember him laughing, wine in hand, and a joke at the ready. Memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to ARCH would be appreciated.

A very special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Sault Area Hospital, and St. Michael’s Hospital who took such good care of dad. (Arrangements entrusted to the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre 705-759-2522). Expressions of sympathy may be left at www.arthurfuneralhome.com.

“Perhaps, they are not stars in the sky,
but rather openings where our loved ones shine down
to let us know they are happy”
Inuit mythology

May the night skies forever shine brightly.
