The clock has run out on a $15 million Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation contribution to Sault Ste. Marie's Gateway project, Mayor John Rowswell disclosed tonight.

Mayor Rowswell made the announcement at tonight's meeting of City Council.

The $15 million designated for Sault Ste. Marie's waterfront development is "off the table," Rowswell said.

Neither the Sault nor any other city approved for similar projects was able to meet the criteria.

However, the mayor also had some good news.

He said that some time ago, Sault Ste. Marie received designation as an international U.S. tourist gateway to Northern Ontario, andhe's hoping that males the City eligible for $5 million in development funding.

Further details will be added to this article later tonight.
