MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES

****************************** Fines and suspension for illegal cow moose hunt

A Sault Ste. Marie man has been fined $2,500 for illegally hunting a cow moose without a licence and $500 for possessing illegally killed wildlife.

Fred G. Howe pleaded guilty to both charges.

Howe's hunting privileges were cancelled for one year and he was prohibited from taking part in hunting-related activities or having hunting-related equipment in any area of Ontario where game wildlife are found for one year.

The moose was seized and forfeited to the Crown.

The court heard that on October 15, 2010, during a routine check of a hunter, a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer overheard a conversation about a moose that may have been shot in the area.

He confirmed the information and was told the location of the moose.

When the officer arrived at the kill site he found three men and a very large adult cow moose that had been tagged illegally as a calf.

The officer identified Howe as the person who had shot the moose.

Justice of the Peace Alex Spence heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Chapleau, on January 12, 2011.
