The final element of a major revitalization of Rosedale Park has been approved for installation.

"We're quite excited for this piece of equipment to go into the park," Brent Lamming, the city's director of community services, told a meeting of the parks and recreation advisory committee on Tuesday.

"It is a zipline that's approximately 33 feet in length," Lamming said.

The zipline is a key feature of an almost-complete $215,000 revitalization project at the park, generously supported by Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore, Kiwanis Club of Sault Ste. Marie, Childcare Algoma and Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore Foundation.

Rosedale Park is located behind Cambrian Mall, near the former Rosedale School, now a community hub.

Recent improvements there include a Kiwanis-built snowshoeing trail around the park, Lamming said.

Last week, the city approved $10,000 in in-kind services to install the zipline.

Lamming said that at 33 feet, it will be smaller than Sault Ste. Marie's first zipline at Bellevue Park, which is 50 feet long.

The city is expected to release a tender to complete the Rosedale Park project, either later this winter or in early spring.

Other news from Tuesday's parks and recreation advisory committee:

  • a request for proposals will be issued within the next couple of weeks for the west-end splash pad at Manzo Park. Construction there is expected to start in the spring
  • Sault Cycling Club's single-track mountain bike trail is expected to be finished by summer
  • Deane Greenwood was appointed to another term as committee chair
  • Jennifer Flood was named assistant chair
  • the committee has begun a lengthy process to review a request from the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association to change the name of Snowden Park
