Sault College honours its brightest and best

Friends Christina Coutu (left) and Melissa Slivinsky were among more than 200 students honoured last night at Sault College's 2003 Awards night.

Christina received the Joseph Kuchma ALS Memorial Scholarship, which commemorates a former member of the college's business faculty who died from Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig disease.

Business professor Jack Boushear, a friend of Kuchma's who sponsors that award, says the recipient is determined by a class vote among business students.

"Christina got the majority of the students' support," Boushear says.

"She came to me to ask if the second-place winner [Melissa Slivinsky] could receive the award instead of her.

"Since there was money earning interest in an account that I had set up years ago, I decided to provide an award for both of the deserving students," Boushear said.
