Sault businesses affected by collision hope to reopen Tuesday

Single vehicle weekend collision took out front windows of optometrist clinic, mobility equipment supplier

Two downtown businesses (Superior Vision Care at 246 Queen St. E. and Hart Mobility at 242 Queen St. E.) remained closed Monday after a single vehicle collision damaged the front entrances to each business Sunday evening.

“We’re closed today but I think we’ll be fine to reopen tomorrow (Tuesday). We’re just cleaning up a lot of glass,” said a Superior Vision Care employee, speaking to SooToday.

An antique optometrist chair, on display in Superior Vision Care’s front entrance, was undamaged.

“There wasn’t a nick on it,” the employee said.

“We’re closed today for cleanup but I imagine we’ll be open for business tomorrow,” said Hart Mobility’s Russell Lidstone.

“Things happen. You take it with a grain of salt and move on. We just hope everyone was okay in the vehicle,” Lidstone said.

Witnesses at the scene said the vehicle jumped the northern curb on Queen Street at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

The cause of the incident is still officially under investigation, Sault Police Service Cst. Sonny Spina told SooToday Monday.

“There were no serious injuries reported and there are no criminal charges (related to the collision),” Spina said, adding the male driver of the vehicle (the truck’s lone occupant) sustained non-life threatening injuries.

“We did respond to the scene but extrication (of the motorist from the vehicle) was not required...we just contained some (automotive) fluids that leaked on to the sidewalk, put a little peat moss down to absorb the fluids,” said Stuart Cole, Sault Fire Services deputy chief.
