A Sault Ste. Marie native and onetime local radio reporter has been elected to Edmonton's city council.

Kerry Diotte - shown making a campaign stop in a dog park - easily sailed to victory Monday in a ward that had no incumbents among six candidates in the running.

The rookie politician's message focused on improving core services, cutting waste and fighting big tax hikes.

He also pledged to make public safety and better roads high priorities.

Diotte was a longtime Edmonton Sun columnist who often wrote critically about city hall.

The award-winning journalist relocated to Alberta from Ontario in 1982 to join the Calgary Sun.

He moved to the Alberta capital in 1985 and held various posts with the Sun in that city.
