Sault Ste. Marie has been granted $125,000 in funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) Climate change staff grants initiative to help address staffing gaps and increase our capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change or reduce greenhouse (GHG) emissions.

Sault Ste. Marie is among 59 communities across Canada benefitting from this initiative.

One of the four pillars of FutureSSM is environmental sustainability. This funding will be used on related activities that will focus on the planning and implementation of municipal climate change priorities; primarily the development and implementation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie’s GHG emissions inventory and reduction strategy.

“I want to thank the Government of Canada for supporting the City’s efforts to develop and implement climate change priorities that will further environmental protection and sustainability”, stated Mayor Christian Provenzano. Initiatives such as FutureSSM and Shape the Sault will set an important long-term direction for our community, and this support will help ensure information related to climate change adaptation and GMG emissions is incorporated through projects such as the development of an emissions reduction strategy.”

“FCM’s Climate Change staff grant is timely and aligns well with the Environmental Sustainability pillar of our FutureSSM initiative,” stated Tom Vair, Deputy CAO, Community Development and Enterprise Services at the City of Sault Ste. Marie. “The community will benefit greatly from having a resource dedicated to the development of policies and plans to address climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas reduction.”

The Climate change staff grants are offered through the Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program (MCIP) delivered by FCM and funded by the Government of Canada.

FutureSSM will be searching for a candidate to fill the full-time position in the coming weeks.
