Salzburger Hof announces sale to Batchewana First Nation

Marking the end of an era, a well known hotel and restaurant in the Algoma region has announced it has been sold.

The Lake Shore Salzburger Hof Resort, located at Batchawana Bay, 65 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Marie, was sold Nov. 14 to Batchewana First Nation for what is described as ‘private use,' says a message posted to the resort's Facebook page.

Salzburger Hof Resort owners were not immediately available for comment.

Alexandra Syrette, Batchewana First Nation communications coordinator, informed SooToday an official announcement will be made next week regarding the purchase. 

The resort’s restaurant, known for its Austrian and German food, was billed as ‘a slice of Austria on Lake Superior,’ its cottages providing guests with an impressive view of Batchawana Bay.

A family business, the resort operated for 47 years, owned and operated by Ann Elsigan.

Elsigan died March 31, 2018. 

“This is a bittersweet moment in our lives as we made the sale our parents (Ann and Ralph) wanted. We have always looked forward to hearing and sharing events that occurred in your (customers) lives, the jokes, and all the good laughs we shared. Thank you for your loyalty and support over these past years,” wrote Elsigan family members in a Facebook post.

“The resort’s website will be closed down, but its Facebook page will remain up with posts about the area and news concerning the family and future plans. Keep checking back on us!” the family wrote.
