Sault College

Randy Russon, SooToday's kick-ass editorialist and sports director, has been hired as head coach of Sault College's rejuvenated women's basketball program.

The Lady Cougars are returning this fall after an absence of almost 20 years.

Their first season will be spent playing exhibition games against other Ontario and U.S. colleges.

Regular league play is expected to resume during the 2003-2004 season.

Coached high school since 1996

Russon started coaching at the high school level in 1996 at Mount St. Joseph (junior girls) and White Pines (senior girls). He's currently president of the Algoma Basketball Association.

"Any coach can get a team to achieve. I've always tried to get my teams to overachieve," says Russon, who intends to concentrate on team building and conditioning during the Cougars' first season.

"We've been successful with a city championship at Mount St. Joseph in 1997 and with a winning record at White Pines in 2002, the first winning season, so I've been told, in the 30-year history of the school," he said.

Russon intends to continue coaching at White Pines, and also to continue writing both editorials and running the sports department here at SooToday.

As of June 1, Russon and his team have been updating SooToday's sports coverage daily.
