An empty flag pole outside the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre. On Saturday mayor Christian Provenzano announced the Russian flag has been removed from the display of flags in solidarity with Ukraine.

The Russian flag has been removed from a display of world flags that fly in front of the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.

In a post on his Facebook page, mayor Christian Provenzano said Ukraine's response to an unlawful and unprovoked invasion by Russia has been inspiring.

"A nation and its people fighting against tyranny and for freedom. Ukraine’s example and courage deserves our collective respect, gratitude and support," said Provenzano.

The Russian flag has been removed as an act of solidarity, said the mayor. It is one of the international flags that fly in front of the civic centre, along with flags like Italy, Finland, Ukraine and others.

"It will remain down so long as Russia continues its unlawful and unprovoked attack against Ukraine," said Provenzano.
