NEWS RELEASE

ROTARY CLUB OF SAULT STE. MARIE

Do you know a young adventurer who would benefit from a year abroad where they would learn about and experience another culture?

The Rotary Youth Exchange Program is looking for students to advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace through international high school exchange.

“I think it's truly the opportunity of a life time given to us by Rotary, and that all students benefit tremendously through the program,” shared Elliot Caruso who spent his 2016-2017 school year in Croatia on Rotary Youth Exchange. “I think kids should apply because it allows you to travel the world, make lifelong friendships, and learn more about yourself than you could imagine.”

One of the Rotarians facilitating Rotary Youth Exchange for the students of Sault Ste. Marie, Megan Wigmore, has personally experienced the impact of going on exchange: “When I was 15-years-old applying for this program, I had no idea where it would take me. Now, years later, I have 'family' and lifelong friendships with people all over the world thanks to Rotary Youth Exchange. When you have such an incredible experience with a program like this, it's only natural to want to give back to it. I take so much joy in being able to share in, support and watch other students as they embark on their Rotary Youth Exchange adventures."

A Rotary Youth Exchange student will be an ambassador of his or her country and city, sponsoring Rotary Club and school. They will share their culture, language and country with fellow students, host families, and new friends.

This year’s information session for parents and candidates will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017 at 6 p.m. in Plummer Room at City Hall.

The deadline for submitting preliminary applications is Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. at the Rotary office, 364 Queen St. E. A printable form as well as an online form can be found here.

Students that are accepted into the program will attend four District sponsored week-end conferences to prepare them for their year abroad. “Outbound" students will depart for their assigned country in either July or August for approximately 11 months.
