OPP NEWS RELEASE

************************* GARDEN RIVER FIRST NATION, ON - An OPP officer with the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment narrowly escaped being hit by another [alleged] drunk driver this morning. This morning at about 4 a.m. the officer was stopped on the shoulder of Highway 17 in Garden River.

The officer had just finished dealing with another unrelated matter when he was getting back into his cruiser.

He looked in his rear-view mirror to see another vehicle traveling on the shoulder, right at him, at high speeds.

The investigation has revealed that the offending vehicle was passing another vehicle on the gravel shoulder of the roadway.

The officer floored his cruiser just fast enough to get out of the way of being rear-ended by the car.

The driver narrowly missed running into the back of the cruiser, then returned to the paved portion of the roadway and passed the marked police car.

The car was quickly pulled over the officer determined that the driver had been drinking.

Eighteen-year-old Robert Robinson-Perreault of 23 Nebenaigoching Street, Batchewana First Nation faces five charges.

He is charged under the Criminal Code with impaired driving and driving while over the legal limit of .08.

He was also charged with drinking while under age and having open liquor in a vehicle contrary to the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario.

The fifth charge is driving with a Class G1 licence with blood/ alcohol limit above zero.

Mr. Robinson-Perreault will start his court appearances on September 17 in Sault Ste. Marie. *************************
