With nominations set to close later this week, Sault Ste. Marie got a fifth candidate for mayor on Monday, as well as a fourth candidate for Ward 3 city councillor and a second candidate for Ward 3 trustee on the Algoma District School Board.

Public relations/ communications practitioner Robert Peace filed his mayoral nomination paperwork today at the Civic Centre.

Well-known retired teacher/vice principal Ron Zagordo is running for a city council seat.

Frank Gaccione, owner of the old Virene's building and treasurer of the Downtown Association, is running for school board trustee.

Mayoral candidate Peace came to Sault Ste. Marie two years and two months ago as director of community relations at Rolling Pictures.

Earlier this year, he travelled to Europe to assist Ukrainian refugees.

Last week, Peace announced he was stepping down from Rolling Pictures to become president of Rolling North, a new Sault-based corporate production and multimedia business.

"It has been 40 years since I began my career working at Queen’s Park at the young age of only 21," Peace said in a news release.

"A recent university graduate thrust into the halls of the Ontario Legislature, I observed early on the dedication and commitment of those who are elected to serve. The knowledge gained from working with the premier of Ontario and the provincial Opposition has never left me. Nor has the inspiration."

"My career in communications and media production has since taken me around the world and carved out the path that brought my employer to this community. I am now proud to call Sault Ste. Marie my home. I am here to stay."

"I want to move this wonderful city forward on an agenda of innovative ideas, realistic approaches, and sound working relationships."

"I am the candidate who brings no political baggage to the table, who owes no debts to friends, and who has nothing to gain but your trust."

"Federal taxpayer, provincial taxpayer and municipal taxpayer – we are all the same person. Why do we put our hard-earned tax dollars into silos and think we will come out with an efficient, successful formula to fund positive change in our city? Local leadership needs to dismantle existing silos, bring all levels of government together and motivate council to work as a team."

The deadline for other candidates to file paperwork to run in the Oct. 24 local elections is 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19.
