Watershed conditions statement

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would like to issue a statement to residents in regard to current watershed conditions.

Most of the local small creeks and streams are flowing below seasonal levels.

The weather forecast from the Surface Water Monitoring Centre indicates that there may be rainfall amounts of 40 – 60 mm over the next 48 hours with most of the precipitation falling during the day Thursday.

As well, temperatures will generally be above the freezing point.

As a result of these conditions the remaining snow pack will melt quickly over the next few days.

These factors will combine to increase the amount of water entering our local water courses and increase water levels and flows.

Flooding of local streams and rivers is not anticipated based on the current conditions.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority will be closely monitoring stream flows across the watershed.

There may be localized flooding in areas with poor drainage.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would like to extend a warning to residents and visitors to use extreme caution when close to rivers, creeks and streams.

Potential increases in water levels and flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery.

Please remind children to keep away from fast flowing rivers and streams.

This statement will not be updated unless conditions warrant.
