********************* Coullard scholarship funds engineering student

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — A scholarship created last year in memory of Sault High swimmer Angela May Coullard has a recipient for the 2006-07 school year.

Rebecca Wilson of Sault Ste. Marie will be a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering at Lake Superior State University this fall.

Angela's parents, Jon and Elena Coullard, established the endowment after she succumbed to injuries suffered during a February 2005 automobile accident.

Her scholarship benefits Sault Area High School student athletes who attend Lake Superior State University during their freshman year.

While proceeds continue to flow in from the community, LSSU's Foundation office administers gifts and funds through an endowed scholarship account.

In addition to memorial gifts received from family and friends, students at Sault Area High School played an important role in endowing the scholarship.

Last year, fund raisers took the form of a hat day, bake sales, and a collection taken during graduation ceremonies.

Sustained efforts raised almost $15,000.

The swim team raised another $4,558 during a swim-a-thon this past April and through donations collected outside Wal-Mart.

Right now the fund's balance stands at over $30,000.

Interest from this principal is what finances scholarship grants.

Candidates for the Angela Coullard Memorial Scholarship must participate in a Sault Area High School athletic program for at least two seasons and graduate with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

They must also be accepted as a first-year full-time student at Lake Superior State University.

Contributions to the Angela Coullard Memorial Scholarship may be forwarded to the LSSU Foundation Office, 650 W. Easterday Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783, or online through www.lssu.edu/foundation

Call the office at 906/635-2665.
