Herb Brooks turned down more than a million dollars a year to coach the New York Rangers, Sunday's New York Daily News reports.

The newspaper also says Garden River's "fiery" Ted Nolan (shown) would be a people's favourite for the job but he'd need lots of help.

Last week, crosstown rival the New York Times quoted a senior NHL official expressing similar views.

Interestingly, New York's third major daily, the Post, never mentions Nolan in its articles about Sather's search for a coach. To read the Post's Sunday coverage, click here.

'Would need strong assistants'

Daily News sportswriter John Dellapina lists Nolan among nine candidates in his Sunday article. Here's what he says about Nolan: "Fiery motivator would be a popular hire: would need strong assistants."

Dellapina reports that U.S. Olympic coach Herb Brooks couldn't sleep for three nights before advising Sather this week that he wasn't interested in the opening.

Sather reportedly started negotiations by offering more than $1 million a year, but Brooks didn't want to leave his wife and grown children behind to work in New York, the newspaper said.

Wanted Sather to run the bench during games

"When they finally did get together," Dellapina wrote, "Brooks told Sather he'd be willing to coach and prepare the team in practices and let the GM run the bench during games -- a warning siren if ever there was one."
