Rain in the forecast tonight and overnight combined with melting snow from warm temperatures could cause water levels to rise.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority has issued a water safety statement.

"Currently, local rivers, creeks and streams are flowing at normal levels," it said. "Snowmelt, warm temperatures, and forecasted rainfall will result in moderate runoff in local streams. There may be minor flooding in low-lying areas due to increased runoff in watercourses."

It added water in rivers, streams and the channels is cold and fast flowing.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is issuing a water safety statement to residents regarding current watershed conditions. Flood forecasting and warning are part of the Conservation Authority’s provincially mandated responsibilities. This statement is sent out so that residents can be informed and aware.

The current weather forecast indicates moderate rainfall (10 - 25 mm) today and overnight. Daytime high temperature will range between 5°C to 12°C and night-time temperature above 0°C for the next five days.

The amount of water contained in the snowpack is still present at the upper reaches of the watershed. Currently, local rivers, creeks and streams are flowing at normal levels. Snowmelt, warm temperatures, and forecasted rainfall will result in moderate runoff in local streams. There may be minor flooding in low-lying areas due to increased runoff in watercourses.

The flood control channels owned and maintained by the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority are currently flowing at normal levels. The flood control channels will experience a rise in water levels. It is important to remember that the water in rivers, streams and the channels is cold and fast flowing.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority will continue to closely monitor stream flows across the watershed and update this message based on the changing weather/streamflow conditions.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from the flood control channels and all waterways. Flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from waterways during this time.

This statement is in effect until March 9, 2024.
