************************* Manitoulin man charged with stunt driving

On Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 11:13 a.m., Manitoulin OPP was on patrol of Highway 540 in Burpee Twp when a Chevy Silverado truck entered the radar at 132km/h in a 80 km/h zone.

As a result of this investigation the driver who resides on Manitoulin has been charged under the new racing/stunt driving law under section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The driver had his truck seized and impounded for seven days.

One of the subsections of this offence is driving 50 kms over the posted speed limit.

Break & enter in progress foiled by employees

On Friday, September 25, 2009 at 5:48 a.m. while the custodian of the Rainbow Ridge Golf Club in Manitowaning was working in the club house, he came upon two people - a male and female - who had broken into the building.

They were in the bar area of the clubhouse removing liquor and cash from the till.

Once confronted the suspects fled the building leaving behind a vehicle which was later learned had been stolen from Wikwemikong earlier that morning.

Manitoulin OPP responded to the scene a search of the area failed to locate the suspects.

Manitoulin OPP is continuing to investigate and review evidence left behind, including surveillance video which captured the suspects on tape.

Complaint of vehicles passing school buses

On Friday, September 25, 2009 at 8:12 a.m., Manitoulin OPP received information from a concerned citizen that vehicles continue to pass the school buses with the lights flashing while loading and unloading children on Agnes Street in Gore Bay.

Officers will be patrolling the area and observing motorists in the area in attempts to solve this concern.

Constable Allan Boyd, community services officer for the Manitoulin OPP, wants to remind motorists that it is a serious offence under the Highway Traffic Act to pass a school bus while the lights are flashing.

This type of offence can lead to a $485 fine, plus six demerit points.

The other serious consequences are being responsible for the injury or death of a child.

As motorists we must use extra caution and watch for children as they sometimes don’t watch for vehicles.
