Geraldine Ferraro, once a candidate for vice president of the United States, has resigned from Hillary Clinton’s campaign finance team.

Ferraro's resignation followed comments she made to a California newspaper, the Daily Breeze, accusing media outlets of giving favourable coverage to Barack Obama because he's black.

"If Obama was a white man," Ferraro told the newspaper, "he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman [of any color], he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

Obama's campaign objected to the remark, prompting Ferraro to go still further, commenting that "I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"

Clinton described Ferraro's comment as "regrettable."
