NEWS RELEASE
CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY, ALGOMA & DISTRICT UNIT
************************ What
The Algoma Youth Action Alliance (AYAA), in partnership with local orthodontist Dr. Kent Floreani, the Canadian Cancer Society and local school boards want to help the youth of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma be "through with chew" by getting rid of their chew tins.
Chewing tobacco is not a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes and is infiltrating the youth of the community.
Chewing tobacco also poses an environmental concern in that their containers are non-recyclable, and they contain lead, considered a toxic waste to municipal landfill sites.
From February 14 to 22, youth will have the opportunity to discard chew tins in local schools and receive free Quit Spit Kits.
On February 23, Dr. Floreani will make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society based on the number of chew tins collected.
Representatives from the waste disposal service will collect the tins for disposal.
The disposal will be accompanied by a "chuck a tin" shootout.
AYAA representatives with members of the Canadian Cancer Society and Dr. Floreani's office will be competing in a shootout competition before the tins are taken away for disposal.
