As announced earlier this summer, PUC is in the process of developing a Watermain Relining Program for Sault Ste. Marie. Watermain relining is a proven technique used by utilities across the world to address aging infrastructure and to help improve water quality.

In order to adequately plan for a long-term relining program, PUC will be undertaking a trial project this year to evaluate the time, effectiveness, and cost of watermain relining in Sault Ste. Marie’s local conditions.

The streets selected for the 2016 relining project are Irwin Avenue and Tuckett Street.

Prior to the project getting started next month, PUC would like to invite residents in the Irwin Avenue and Tuckett Street neighbourhoods or anyone that is just interested in learning more about watermain relining to a Public Information Session.

The information session will be held at St. Jerome Church (26 Carmel Road), from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016.

“This information session will allow staff from; PUC, Tulloch Engineering, and Aquarehab to engage with residents in the affected neighborhoods - and answer any questions they may have regarding this new and exciting project,” says, Giordan Zin, PUC Supervisor of Customer Engagement. “PUC takes customer concerns very seriously, and this information session is a great opportunity for PUC to address any questions or concerns residents may have regarding this project.”

Additionally, the Public Information Session will provide residents with the opportunity to meet representatives from Aquarehab, the contractor responsible for carrying out this project, and learn about the process of watermain relining from the experts.

This personal interaction will give residents the opportunity to understand the process of watermain relining and what to expect over the course of the project.

PUC would also like to remind customers of the ongoing water quality telephone survey in the east end, and that updating their account information is the best way to ensure they are contacted for the survey. Customers can call PUC Customer Care at 705-759-6522 to speak with a representative who can update their account information.

The purpose of the survey is to identify pockets of homes in the east end that are still experiencing water quality issues. The results of the survey and the findings from this trial-relining project will help PUC develop and implement a long-term annual Watermain Relining Program.
