Rob Brewer, president and chief executive officer of PUC Services Inc., will brief city council on Monday about five battery storage facilities it wants to build in Sault Ste. Marie.
PUC, in conjunction with Starwood Energy Group Global Inc., is proposing to build the facilities in response to a recent request for proposals from the provincial government's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to support the province's energy infrastructure.
The idea is to allow energy from renewable sources like solar or wind power to be temporarily stored and then released when power is most needed.
The locations of the sites are shown in the photo gallery above.
They will repurpose properties already owned by PUC Services and the City of Sault Ste. Marie.
PUC says it has secured support for the initiative from Missanabie Cree First Nation and is talking to other local First Nations.
The battery storage project is in the community outreach and approval process through the IESO.
Brewer is expected to answer questions from city council about battery storage and potential risks.
Monday's city council meeting will be live-streamed on SooToday starting at 5 p.m.
