************************* Be prepared!

ELLIOT LAKE, ON - The East Algoma OPP and The City of Elliot Lake is committed to providing a safe community and part of this is through its Community Emergency Management Program.

Emergency Management includes planning, preparation, policy, education and training for both emergency personnel and the public.

It is ensuring that the needs of the community are met in the event of a wide scale emergency or disaster.

In your day-to-day living, disasters may seem a distant possibility, yet natural disasters, such as floods or fire, or service disruptions such as power failure can strike any community, at any time. Most people are unaware of their responsibility for initial action in an emergency in that they should be prepared to do what is reasonably necessary in the first 72 hours to protect their life and property.

It’s important to have a family or individual emergency plan in place before disaster strikes.

Preparedness is the planning process a family or individual takes to ensure they can survive an emergency.

People are recommended to prepare an emergency kit.

There are six basics you should stock in your home.

Quantities of these items can be kept in an easy to carry container in case you have to evacuate.

Common sense and preparation is the key.

1. Water

2. Food

3. First aid supplies

4. Clothing and bedding (alternate lodging)

5. Equipment and emergency supplies

6. Special items
