CHRISTIAN PROVENZANO LIBERAL CANDIDATE FOR SAULT STE. MARIE & AREA

************************* Provenzano calls on Martin to reverse his vote on Bill C-429 (use of wood)

Bill C-429 is a private member’s mill introduced in the House of Commons by Gérard Asselin, (Manicouagan, Bloc Québécois).

The intent of the bill is to amend Department of Public Words and Government Services Act to require the Department give preference to concepts that promote the use of wood when it is soliciting bids for construction, maintenance and repair of Federal buildings.

The bill passed second reading and it will become law if it passes third reading.

Sault Ste. Marie MP Tony Martin voted in favour of the bill.

Christian Provenzano, Liberal Candidate for Sault Ste. Marie & Area, calls on Tony Martin to reverse his vote and vote against Bill C-429 on its third reading.

“I understand that Canada’s wood producers are having a difficult time. I do believe that they need the support of the federal government but as a member of parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, I would not support a bill that legislates a preference of wood over steel,” said Provenzano.

“The federal government should not have a legislated preference. When it is appropriate and cost effective to use wood, it should use wood. When it is appropriate and cost effective to use steel, it should use steel.”

“Sault Ste. Marie is a steel city. A very large part of our community make their living either directly or indirectly from the steel industry. As Sault Ste. Marie’s Member of Parliament, I would not support a piece of legislation that could adversely affect our community and I call on Tony Martin to vote against this legislation when it returns to the House of Commons for its third reading,” concluded Provenzano.

“The well-being of the people of Sault Ste. Marie & Area, in my view, should always be fundamental to the concerns of those parties who seek to represent them.”
