CHRISTIAN PROVENZANO LIBERAL CANDIDATE SAULT STE. MARIE & AREA

***************************** Provenzano leads by example on volunteer efforts

SAULT STE. MARIE - Volunteers play a vital role in servicing communities, locally and nationally.

Sault Ste. Marie and area candidate Christian Provenzano says a Liberal government is devoted to inspiring an even greater contribution to our communities, underpinned by a national goal for increasing the rate of volunteering in Canada.

Provenzano’s long-time involvement with local organizations, such as Big Brothers of Saul Ste. Marie, the United Way, Children’s Rehabilitation Algoma, and the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie, underscores his continuing commitment to the community, and the betterment of the region, while being some of his most gratifying accomplishments to date.

“Volunteering is one of the most rewarding experiences, and I encourage everyone to take part,” Provenzano said.

“It’s a great way to get to know your community, and an important opportunity to give something back,”  Provenzano concluded.

A Liberal government will continue to support current volunteers while creating additional opportunities for Canadians to volunteer in a meaningful way.

To achieve this goal, a Liberal government will commit to:

- Creating a new Canada Service Corps, replacing the Canadian Volunteer Initiative that was cancelled by the Harper government, and invest an initial $180 million over four years.

- Investing $160 million over four years to encourage volunteerism in young Canadians. The Canada Service Corps will forgive $1,500 in student loan debt for young Canadians who donate at least 150 hours of service in a year after graduating from post-secondary education. This initiative will create up to 26,000 volunteer postings annually.

- Introducing a $3,000 refundable tax credit in recognition of the costs Canada’s volunteer firefighters incur for their emergency public service.

Christian celebrated Sault Ste. Marie’s volunteerism and volunteers at last night’s United Way Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.
