The federal Liberals have introduced a bill that will force Canadian Internet providers and cellphone companies to provide police with confidential information on their subscribers.

If the Modernization of Investigative Techniques Act becomes law, police will no longer require a court-approved warrant to gain access to names, addresses and telephone numbers, as well as technical information revealing the location of a suspect's computer.

Any police or security agency accessing such information will have to record the reasons for the requests.

The proposed law also requires Internet providers and cellphone companies to install surveillance hardware and software on their networks.
