Environmental groups expressed concern today that only three of 43 “toxic hotspots” have been cleaned up in the Great Lakes region since the heavily polluted sites were identified more than two decades ago.

Locally, contaminated sediments are especially damaging at Bellevue Park and in Little Lake George, immediately east of Sault Ste. Marie.

The concerned groups are pressing for billions of dollars in government funding to undertake restoration work over a wide area.

Advocates for renewed action say attention to toxic pollution has largely disappeared from public discourse since the 1980s.
