Police lay another charge in Pine Plaza incident

On June 3, 2016 at 7:30 a.m. the accused, Nicolas Robert Berto, attended at the city police station and turned himself in to face a further charge of aggravated assault in regards to this ongoing investigation.

The accused attended at bail court on todays date.

Original Release (March 15, 2016):

On the 12 of March 2016, at approximately 2:20 a.m. the Sault Ste. Marie Police was called to the parking lot area at the Pine Street Plaza for a report of a single motor vehicle collision involving a single pedestrian. Upon arrival uniformed police officers encountered a 25-year-old male that was found to have extensive injuries and was transported to the Sault Area Hospital. Further that the 18-year-old suspect had left the scene.

Acting upon this information, officers from the Sault Ste. Marie's Traffic Unit, Forensic Identification Unit and the Criminal Investigation Division were called to investigate this incident.

As a result of the officers investigation an 18-year-old male who turned himself in to the Sault Ste. Marie Police later in the day and was charged with impaired driving causing harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle cause bodily harm and fail to remain.  The male will appear in WASH (Weekend and Statutory Holiday) Court later today.

The 25-year-old male victim has since been transported to Toronto in serious condition.

The 18-year-old accused arrested in relation to this investigation is Nicholas Robert Berto of Queen Street East. This accused will be appearing in bail court this morning.

This investigation is ongoing at this time.
